Officials express condolence on passing of renowned philanthropist

ADDIS ABABA– Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed (PhD) expressed his deep condolence over the death of Dr. Abebech Gobena, a well-known philanthropist with sacred personality.

Abiy said that Abebech Gobena has been a well-known philanthropist and Ethiopia’s icon of compassion.

“I am profoundly distressed by the passing away of Abebech Gobena, who has been Ethiopia’s icon of kindheartedness. May I pass my deepest condolence over her death to her family, friends and other many whose lives have been directly impacted,” said Dr. Abiy.

Similarly, President Sahlework Zewudie expressed her condolence. “I am deeply saddened to hear the news of Abebech Gobena, who is known for her kindness and unparalleled compassion. Although Abebech Gobena did not have her own child, she raised many as her own children. We all should learn from the consecrated of honorable Dr. Abebech Gobena.”

As to her, over the past 36 years, she has raised a large number of Ethiopians through her charitable work started raising 2 children following the 1977 drought. I wish comfort to their relatives and extended family.

 Honorable Dr. Abebech Gobena, a well-known philanthropist, passed away at the age of 85. She was the founder of Children’s Care and Development Association.

As she has taken care of thousands of children over the past 36 years and provided more than 1.5 million people support through various poverty reduction programs, Dr. Abebech has been known for being a mother of Africa.

Addis Ababa City Deputy Mayor, Adanech Abebie said “I would like to express my deepest condolence on the death of Abebech Gobena, our role model who wished us a long and healthy life. I would like to state on behalf of myself and that of the city administration that the good work that this great woman commenced will never stop for a moment!”

Although she physically separated from the people of Ethiopia, her heroic and virtuous deeds are beyond the grave and will always be praised, remembered and sustained, the deputy mayor opined.

Dr. Abebech has received numerous awards and accolades at various national and international arenas as well as held an honorary doctorate from Jimma University following her humanitarian work. Having been attended by doctors at intensive care unit at Paul Hospital following her contract to coronavirus, Dr. Abebech died Sunday at the age of 85.
